DIY Hand Sanitizer

Currently with coronavirus and flu season, we’ve noticed there is a shortage of hand sanitizer you can buy. So, here is a 3 ingredient DIY hand sanitizer you can make with household items.

Disclaimer: Use of hand sanitizer should NOT replace hand washing with soap and water.

The CDC recommends using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. However, in addition, you should be looking for a hand sanitizer without triclosan phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and parabens.

Clear and Well made a list of common hand sanitizer ingredients to avoid and why. It also lists common hand sanitizer brands to avoid if you are looking to purchase one!

Non-Toxic Hand Sanitizer at Home with 3 Ingredients

What you need:
99% rubbing alcohol
Aloe vera gel
Essential oil of choice like lavender, tea tree, peppermint
Small 1-2 oz squeeze or spray bottles (toxin-free plastic or glass)

Instructions:

  1. Fill your bottle 2/3 way full with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Add essential oil of choice (optional).
  3. Fill the rest with aloe vera gel.
  4. Shake well!

Adding an essential oil is optional, but it will make your hand sanitizer smell great! We’ll leave the amount up to you, since some people are sensitive to smells. But we recommend starting with a small amount first so you can control how much to use. You should also patch test the mixture to make sure the essential oil doesn’t irritate you.

While the aloe vera gel will help keep your hands from getting too dry, you can also add some vitamin E oil if you’d like. But we realize that it’s not a common ingredient people may have at home.

You can put your hand sanitizer mix in either a spray or squeeze bottle. Please be sure to use a toxin-free plastic or glass bottle! We got the penguin bottles on Amazon, but recommend getting a clear bottle like this so you can see how much alcohol you’re pouring in.
