Travel Guide: Downtown Los Angeles

Anyone else love staycations as much as we do? It’s always nice to unplug for 24 hours and have a quick getaway. We’re both in Downtown Los Angeles at least once a day, but always for work and school or workouts so we thought it would be nice to have a quick staycation.

There are so many cute walls in DTLA. (Outfits c/o Lorna Jane US)

Where To Stay

Hotel Indigo
899 Francisco St
Los Angeles, 90017

Love the pool at Hotel Indigo! Great to cool off post-workout. (Outfits c/o Lorna Jane US)

There’s so many hotels popping up in DTLA lately, but we love Hotel Indigo because it has a smaller boutique hotel feel.

Cardio goes by faster with a great view and a workout partner.

Plus Hotel Indigo’s gym is really nice. It’s a great space with plenty of cardio equipment, TRX bands, kettlebells, dumbbells, resistance bands, and other weight machines. The gym looks out to the pool and also has a great view of DTLA.

We were able to put together a full-body circuit to get in a great sweat before starting our day.

Workout Classes

DTLA also has a lot of great fitness studios. Here are the ones we recommend.

Speedplay
1113 1/2 S Hope St
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Always so sweaty post class

If you follow us on Instagram, you know Speedplay is one of our favorite Los Angeles fitness studios. It’s a 60-minute class, mixed with cardio (on a Woodway Curve and a C2 rower) and weights/floor work.

We even did a month-long workout challenge last year. Our favorite instructors are Xavier Quimbo and Blake Raymond. You’ll definitely feel sore the next day!

SoulCycle
898 S Olive St
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Best spot in the studio to take a photo. The lighting is so perfect!

We think everyone knows by now that we’re obsessed with SoulCycle… If there’s a SoulCycle, we’ll take class.

CorePower Yoga
3131 S. Hoover Street, Unit 9-D
Los Angeles, CA 90007

We’ve been doing more yoga lately and we love CorePower’s Sculpt class. We usually take classes at the USC Village location because there’s free validated parking and there’s a Trader Joe’s and Target in the same plaza. However, this location is smaller than other locations and gets crowded so get there early to get a spot.

Lazrfit
400 W Pico Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Grace has still yet to try this, but Joanna has! It’s a 50-minute class, but split into 2 games of laser tag. Joanna said it was super fun and didn’t feel like a workout at all. But you’ll be running around and, if you’re able to, jumping over the obstacles!

Healthy Eats

There are a ton of healthy options in DTLA. You can find a restaurant for pretty much any diet (i.e. vegan, paleo, vegetarian). Here are some of our faves!

Prank
1100 S Hope St
Los Angeles, CA 90015

This is a bar, BUT they have tons of delicious, healthy bar food. You’ll find typical bar foods like sliders, but they also offer vegan nachos and veggie cauliflower sliders.

Also, it’s across the street from Speedplay so workout then hydrate with some vodka sodas or some kombucha! Detox then retox.

Zinc Cafe
580 Mateo St
Los Angeles, CA 90013

One of our favorite avocado toasts in Los Angeles.

We always stop by for brunch for their avocado toast with a poached egg. It’s vegetarian and has a ton of healthy, delicious options. The restaurant itself is also gorgeous with tons of natural light.

Tea Master
450 E 2nd St
Los Angeles, CA 90012

This isn’t a restaurant, but Tea Master has THE BEST matcha soft serve in LA. Grab one and a matcha to drink to go. You definitely won’t regret it.

Whole Foods
788 S Grand Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90017

We love to grab a meal to-go from Whole Foods after our workouts. Our favorite smoothie is the Paleo Greens smoothie with Vega protein. But they also have an amazing salad bar, hot bar, and ready-to-eat meals.

Cheat Day Eats

But of course, if you want to indulge, here are some of our favorites!

Birdies
314 W Olympic Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Almost too pretty to eat!

Birdies sells fried chicken and donuts. Our favorite donut is the pistachio thyme, but this rainbow one is definitely the prettiest one! We’re OBSESSED with their spicy fried chicken sandwich. It has such a good kick.

Shake Shack
400 W 8th St
Los Angeles, CA 90014

Can’t go wrong with Shake Shack ever! We love to get the Chick’n Shack with the fries. While we like In N Out more (true Californians), Shake Shack hits the spot.

Bestia
2121 E 7th Pl
Los Angeles, CA 90021

Bestia is still one of the hottest LA restaurants. Reservations need to be made about a month in advance, but there are walk-ins available everyday at the bar. We’ve been so many times, but we can never have enough.

Our favorites dishes are the roasted bone marrow with gnocchetti, cavatelli with pork sausage and black truffles, spicy ‘nduja’ pizza, and the coffee & donuts dessert. But you honestly can’t go wrong with any of the dishes! Highly recommend making a reservation ASAP.

Where should we vacation or staycation next?

  1. Oh my heavens, that avocado toast looks amazing! I think I want to go to downtown LA just to try that. We venture to Southern Cal a couple times a year, but have never stayed in that area. Will have to give it a go!

  2. I am loving this downtown Los Angeles travel guide + loving the fact that you had a staycation in your own town! You two look adorable in all these photos. I am kind of obsessed with your workout outfits + that photo of the donut from Birdies. Wonderful post 🙂
