Semi-Permanent Makeup: Eyebrow Tattoo

Eyebrow Tattoo

We’ve gotten a lot of questions about our brows before, so we wanted to share our eyebrow tattoo process with you! No, they’re not micro-bladed. It’s an ombre powdered eyebrow tattoo. Our eyebrow artist Lisa Le calls it “micro-airbrush.”

Where We Go

We love Lisa at Brow Theory Studio in Irvine.

Yes, we drive about an hour each way, without traffic. But there’s almost always traffic, so that means almost 4 hours in the car sometimes, especially on the weekends… But it’s so worth it!!

Why We Got Our Brows Tattooed

We love getting our brows done because it’s so much easier to not have to figure out how to shape our brows and fill them in daily. (We even got our eyeliner tattooed before!). Plus Lisa takes so much time and care to figure out what the right shape is for your face, even if it’s not your natural brows. For example, our mom’s brows were a little too low on her face. Once Lisa drew her brows in higher and tattooed them, they looked SO much better!

We picked this over microblading because we just like the look better! Plus we weren’t able to find anyone who put as much attention to detail as Lisa. For both of us, Lisa spent around 45 minutes alone just drawing in our brows the first time we went. She would show us the differences each time she re-drew it (we never really saw the difference lol), but she did such an amazing job.

The Process

Pre-Care

Yes, there’s a pre-care process! Everything is listed on the Brow Theory site.

But here are the main takeaways that we found the most important:

  1. It’s not necessary to wax / pluck your brows before. They say do it 48 hours before if you must.
  2. Skin really must be blemish free!! We’ve both had to drive back to LA because Lisa wouldn’t do our touch up since we had breakouts. Otherwise your skin won’t take the ink very well.
  3. Avoid any Retin A 2 weeks before.
  4. Avoid fish oils a week before. It increases inflammation.
  5. Try to work out 24 hours before appointment because working out will increase blood flow which will increase swelling.

Eyebrow Tattoo

The eyebrow tattoo process was relatively painless for us because of the numbing cream.

After the artist draws your brows in and you’re happy with it, they’ll take you into a private room. They numb your brows, so the process isn’t too painful.

Grace thought her first time was a little painful especially more on her right brow than left. We both thought our first annual touch up was more painful than our initial eyebrow tattoo. But oddly enough, by our second annual touch up, it was way less painful!

When you’re done, your eyebrows will be really really dark! Don’t be scared or overwhelmed! Over the next 7 days, your brows will heal and it will become much lighter and smaller. Plus afterwards, you might be like OMG I LOVE INSANELY DARK FRESH BROWS…just like us!

Healing / After-Care

The healing process is about 7 days. They will give you a little card that has the whole aftercare process on it along with a little ointment to apply to your brows.

Applying the ointment is really easy since you can just carry around a small container and some Q-tips in a Ziploc.

Here are the main takeaways:

  1. It’s recommended not to work out for 7 days. Working out will increase blood flow. Also sweat has salt that will pull the pigment from your brows! (We don’t really follow this rule lol, but we probably should… Oops. But we do at least go 3 days without working out.).
  2. Don’t get your brows wet for 24 hours. So shower the next day, and use a wipe to wash your face.
  3. No saunas! Which also means don’t take incredibly hot showers.
  4. Apply the ointment regularly with Q-tips. You apply a “Chapstick” amount, which means just enough so it looks like you have applied Chapstick to your lips, but not so much so it looks like lip gloss.

Around day 4 is when we see the scabs coming off our brows. We don’t scrub them, but let it fall off naturally. Around day 7 if they’re super loose but some left, we’ll lightly rub with our finger pads while washing our face. By day 7, our brows are completely healed!

This was Day 2 of the healing process for Grace.

Touch-Ups

For your first session, you’ll usually go in after 6 weeks for a touch-up. For both of us, we went a little darker during our touch-up.

Afterwards, touch-ups are about every 12-18 months. But if you’re really active or have oily skin, you may need to go in sooner.

Pricing

Prices are all listed here, so please refer to it for updated pricing.

It’s pricey, but we honestly think it’s worth it. It saves us cost on having to get our brows done every 6 weeks. We also rarely need to fill in our brows, just when we want it extra dark or after a few months. It just saves us so much time!
